I think i've mentioned this to you guys before, but the BF and i live in the smallest apartment ever
When we moved back home to NYC after being away for a while, we made a conscious decision to sacrifice space for location. so now we live RIGHT in the center of Manhattan, but our apartment is TINY. it's a studio with a tiny bathroom and a so-called 'kitchen' in the little hallway right by the front door. the trade off is that it's in a gorgeous historic building with an elevator and a 24 hour doorman and we can both walk to work.
When we moved in, we had to get rid of all of our furniture including our bed and buy a fold out couch to sleep on... granted, it's a really nice couch that has a VERY comfy bed inside, but STILL.
So, two weeks ago, one of my co-workers ran into my office and told me to turn on Oprah. (we all have tv's in our offices) Apparently Oprah was showcasing the 'smallest apartment in the world' and how you can still make it livable. my co-worker wanted to make me feel better and said that my apartment couldn't possibly be THAT small...
In glee, i turn on the TV and what do i see? the apartment being shown on Oprah is IN MY BUILDING, on the floor below mine!!! it's the same exact apartment!!!!!!!!!
Needless to say, having my studio shown to the world as 'the smallest apartment ever' ruined my day! hahahaha
watch the video from Oprah here if you want to see the closet i live in!

OMG I thought the apt where we're was small... Mine is three times bigger than that...
that's the reason why I'm moving into a way bigger apt...

Liza, location is everything!
I love the video. The makeover was gorgeous!! Also,
you have less to clean.
2I'd have been mad that she didn't walk upstairs and fix MY place.
Damn you, Oprah!
3Its about location, and as long as your happy thats all that matters!!
4**Not only is England beautiful, but it brings me 2 of my fav. men....Gavin & David**
That's what I say, if you love the location and it suits your life, then poo-poo to the size. You and the bf have obviously made it work, which it what counts
5No Way!!!!! It takes a lot of creativity to make a small space work. If it makes you feel better my condo's 618 sq ft. Not big at all. But we have tons of creative storage spacing.
6i'm always trying to figure out create ways to store things,.... it's such a hassel, there's never enough room for anything... but everytime i get annoyed, i just tell myself that it's temporary! the bf keeps telling me that it's good incentive to work harder and make more $$$
7damn girl! that is teeny! my cousin & her bf lived in one about that size in an historic building Missoula, Mt. Their cooktop folded down over the sink... but hey! I'd look to live smack in the middle of Manahatten!
8the most depressing part is that my mom lives 5 blocks away and our apartment is literally the size of the walk in closets in her bedroom! hahaha
9Sorry to hear that Liza. But I agree if your happy there, that's what counts.
10My first apartment in Philly was smaller than that! It was 200 square feet! I feel your pain.
Then again, I wasn't sharing it with anyone. Except my cat.
11holy.....MOLEY. That is small. I'm surprised they haven't restructured life safety codes to say that this is just too small for today's human scale! On the upside, those arched windows are fabulous. And I usually can handle Nate's look, but WTF happened here? It almost looks like the apartment SHRUNK. I HATE hate hate that room with all the drapey sagginess. Ick!
12RCL - i agree... i think it looked like a parisian bordello the way he re-did it, and i totally didn't get the bed smack in the middle of the room.... :/
13Yeah - as long as you are happy. But I agree RCL, I do not like the drapes, I mean how are you gonna clean under there and what will get stuck there? I have a big thing with spiders myself and that screams spider city!!!
14Just keep working hard and it will pay off - one day you will be able to joke about living in a closet. Or coming out - sorry I could not resist.
HAHAHAH
@ pinksparklegirl
15yeah, nate's design had WAY too much going on. I love design shows, but most of them totally overdue it
16the really sad part is though.... if we lived ANYWHERE outside of NYC we'd be able to afford a huge house for the amount we pay!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
17I hear you on that Liza!
18Yes Liza for sure, I can only imagine how much you pay in rent.

I'm such a space wh*re. It probably comes from living in CA my whole life, so I can't imagine an entire home being that small. I'd suffocate if my bedroom was that small, I don't even like small hotel rooms.
20You have my sympathy.
Liza its only temporary pretty soon you guys will be able to afford a little more space. About 5 years ago hubby and I went through some tough times and had to move into a 600 sq. ft. apartment and lived there for a year and a half. But eventually things got better and we found a bigger place that we could afford. Don't worry about a thing, things always work out in the end. And the place is cute its not bad at all. Plus you got lots of ideas with that show.
21Liza, I bet you are paying alot too!! I had freinds in my old job in Manhattan that were paying up to 1,200 a month for s tiny shizz hole just because it was in manhattan..
I would never do that, a lot of people are wising up and moving to the bronx and queens cuz its cheaper and bigger and still very clos eto the city
22yayi - we're paying way more than $1,200... how pathetic is that?!
23Dude!!!! now ay no how! you can get a fat 3 bedroom in the bronx! and the bronx is IN right now. Everyone is moving in like mad.. Not bad anymore at all!
Add in all you spend on partying, drinks ans other expenses and you guys are losing money instead of saving
24i know... it's a damn shame yayi... but i love being in the middle of the city and being able to walk to work!
25Again...holey....MOLEY.
26Man, hope that is worth it Liza
Most of my freinds in NYC did the same thing and they were happy paying all that because their priority was just that, being in the city and enjoying it.
When they finally get their fill, they move out and start saving up
27well... my plan is more along the lines of my BF starting to make a lot more money! hahahahah
28you made the right call. so much better to walk to work, be in a neighborhood where you can walk to a good food shop, restaurant, walk home after a night out on the town, etc.
but keep an eye out in the paper, you never know when something better in the neighborhood might turn up!!
29the problem was that we had to get it at the top of the market.... ah well! it's awesome to have a 24 deli right on the corner and a doorman to pick up your drycleaning! haha
30yeah Liza, my friend was the same way
her BF was taking the
final tests to work in wall street so he wil be loaded pretty soon!! hahahahaha
Arthur, I see the benefits to that, but unless you have money to burn... you can get much better places. A friend of mine moved back to alabama after getting tired of NYC and she is paying less for a whole house in alabama than what she paid for a miserable NYC tiny azz studio
31maybe yayita. I grew up in a city and the first time I moved out, I was so excited to have a garage, a yard, and enough room to actually put everything away. It was cool, but I didn't realize how much I missed city life until I moved back to a city. I like to be able to walk everywhere and have and will continue to trade off living space for a neighborhood.
But that's why they make chocolate AND vanilla
.
32I pay $1100 a month for 425 square feet and a small yard, utilities and cable included. And that's a freaking SCORE where I live. Up in Oregon my friends pay about $750 for two bedroom houses. Ugh. I can't imagine paying more than I am now, especially for something half as big as what I'm in now with no yard. I've heard Boston's expensive, but DAMN.
33Oh dude dont get me wrong! I am an NYC girl all my life! LOve cities.. I dislike small towns and suburbs, cant stand that people know everyone and its always the same faces.
But a train ride in NYC gets you there in a sec!, you may even move to ther upper west or east.. id be a bit cheaper than being right in the middle.
Liza where are you exactly? my old office was at 53rd and 7th
I miss NYC so much!!!!
I hate Madrid
34Derp, Manhattan. Not Boston. Sorry, my brain is working on overdrive today and starting to sputter out.
35damn I can't see it! I have to open it from my firefox browser

36Liza I feel for you. How long do you think it will be before you can move? Do you plan to stay in NYC forever? I've never been there before so I'm pretty clueless as to how much it costs to purchase a place there. I imagine it's pretty expensive to say the least. Is that your hope someday?
37See I'm a huge lover of space! I don't like cramped quarters--probably has to do with growing up in Montana. In Boston I lived in a three bedroom apartment with three guys and I felt cramped! haha, we were on Comm Ave and it's not that crazy busy but I still felt claustrophobic! I couldn't do what you do! But I envy people that can, I wish I could live in the middle of Manhattan and not feel claustro. HAHAHA
I'm in Colorado now and it's beautiful out and I'm loving the
best of both worlds-nature and city(not like NY though!
)
Oh yeah, I watched that Oprah!
38Wow, I can't believe he tented it, it seems to draw it in even more!
But seriously, thats what NYC is about, being out
and about, not being in your apt. so congrats on location and building!
You and BF must really LURVE each other!
I lived in my hubby's 475 ft. studio for 1 1/2 yrs. with him before we bought our condo and I thought that was small!
